What is Thermage™?

Thermage™ is a cosmetic non-invasive procedure used to tighten skin all over the body. The procedure is safe, effective and requires a short time period for recovery.

Thermage™ does not involve the use of lasers. Instead, it uses radiofrequency to penetrate and create heat. The radiofrequency energy is delivered down to the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen. This causes better interlacing of the existing collagen and increased tightening of the skin.

Patients who opt for Thermage™ will be happy to know that there is no need to purchase a number of treatments. It is a one-time procedure and may take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. It can be repeated six months or more later if needed. This largely depends on the areas that require treatment. Certain patients may be able to see immediate improvements while it may take as much as six months for others. The results of Thermage™ are known to last for years. On the other hand, this depends on the condition of the skin and the aging process.

There is little downtime associated with Thermage™. Patients do not have to take any days off from work after the procedure. Few patients face a small amount of post-operative swelling and redness. This will subside within two days. When compared to the after effects of other invasive laser procedures, the post-operative effects of Thermage™ are very mild.

Since Thermage™ does not involve laser treatment, any skin color or type can be treated. Patients should be reassured that there is minimal risk of scarring or burning. Dr. Shelton strongly feels that this is the biggest advantage of Thermage™. This is because certain laser procedures can cause serious skin scarring and discoloration in patients with dark skin.
