Ron Shelton MD

Our Approach

After completing his medical degree at The State University of New York, Dr. Ron Shelton went through rigorous residency programs and furthered his education and training in the area of Mohs micrographic surgery and cosmetic dermatologic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

In addition to serving as Chief of Dermatology Service at the hospital at Langley Air Force Base, Dr. Shelton was specifically recruited by The Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC, in 1993, to create their division of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery. He was responsible for creating multidisciplinary education of cosmetic dermatology to Plastic Surgeons, ENT Facial Plastic Surgeons and Ophthalmologists by presenting Grand Rounds to their departments when he joined the medical center and was the creator and co-director of the first Annual Mount Sinai Cosmetic Dermatology Annual Symposium which has become one of the largest cosmetic dermatology ongoing conferences in NYC. He was responsible for training the dermatology residents in dermatologic surgery and instituting the medical center’s first ever laser center for cosmetic dermatology. During his tenure at the medical center, Dr. Shelton presented original work at national conferences and published many articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks.

In 1998, Dr. Shelton’s private practice on the prestigious Park Avenue of NYC in which he continued to offer cosmetic dermatology, Mohs surgery and reconstruction was established. During this time Dr. Shelton created one of the first NYC medical spas and accredited office-based surgical facilities. Under one roof, he established a 6,000 square foot group practice with dermatologic and plastic surgeons and an aesthetician and a full Mohs laboratory with the state-of-the-art equipment, including the newest lasers and technology that allowed the telepathology communication between his lab and pathologists to consult on microscope slide interpretation in real-time.

Dr. Shelton has taught and continues to teach hundreds of dermatology residents, plastic surgery residents and international cosmetic dermatology fellows, both at the Mount Sinai Medical Center as well as in his private practice. When asked why he loves teaching, Dr. Shelton explains that he loves the field of medicine and wouldn’t be able to provide excellent care to his patients if he hadn’t been taught by his mentors, including physicians and nurses, when he was in training. He also believes strongly in patient education and communication and has been praised that his procedural handouts that he gives to his patients for the before and after procedure instructions are extremely complete. That is because Dr. Shelton has improved them continually over 20 years of doing cosmetic dermatology and Mohs surgery, and listens to his patients, often incorporating their input after their experience with his procedures.

Patients continually say that Dr. Shelton has golden hands, is extremely compassionate and gentle, is a great listener and very sincere. They feel immediately more relaxed as soon as they meet him and see his warm smile.
