What is cosmetic dermatology

Cosmetic surgery and procedures are techniques that change, restore or enhance a person’s appearance. With these procedures a doctor can improve the aesthetic appearance of the skin tissue by using procedures that are typically, minimally invasive.

For most, whether we like it or not, physical appearance influences how we see ourselves and how others see us. The size, shape, and look of our bodies may affect how we feel about ourselves and, in some cases, how we function. There is nothing wrong with wanting to change the way you look. Some people do this through diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes. Some have cosmetic surgery, especially if they are unhappy with a specific aspect of their body or appearance that surgery can change.

Types of Cosmetic Surgery in NYC

There are different types of cosmetic surgery, reconstructive and elective. Reconstructive surgery is mostly performed to deal with the surface of the skin. For instance, it can be laser resurfacing, for facial redness, such as either congenital port wine stains or rosacea capillary blood vessels in the skin. Lasers can also be used for tattoo removal, reduce brown spots, hair reduction, for acne scars, for hair follicle pores to diminish their enlargement. Fillers can be used for wrinkles, to decrease volume loss in the face that creates the aged appearance; chemical peels can used for resurfacing, Botox and Dysport™ can further be used to minimize muscle contraction in areas that create lines, such as around the eyes, between the eyebrows and the forehead; fat injections are also used for voluminization sculpture. The fillers used for volumization for wrinkles are Restylane™ and Juvederm™, as well as Sculptra™, which are for larger volume placements and Radiesse™.

While reconstructive surgery is non-invasive, elective surgery is. Liposuction is one such procedure that is more invasive and this can reduce adipose or fatty deposits in certain areas to improve contours. Fat injections can be used for volumization that can be removed at the same time as liposuction from one part of the body and placed in another or can be removed without liposuction per se.

Therefore, for whatever reason a person decides to have a cosmetic procedure, know that there are two types available, reconstructive and elective. For each procedure, it is important that the patient first consult a doctor.
