Can NYC patients use Botox for wrinkles?

The signs of aging can be troublesome for both men and women. Folds and wrinkles around the glabellar area and the nasolabial folds can become deep and distinguished. Fortunately, dermatologists such as Dr. Shelton  in NYC are here to help. With a number of injectables available, he is able to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve a patient’s overall youthfulness.

There are two types of injectables available at Dr Shelton's practice: dermal fillers and medical injectables.

Dermal fillers are used to add volume. They are typically made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. These are injected into wrinkles and folds to add volume and smooth the skin. Common dermal fillers include Radiesse and Juvéderm.

Medical injectables, work differently. Botox and Dysport are two examples that are offered at Dr. Shelton’s practice. These are made of botulinum toxins and can cause relaxation of muscles. Botox is used on the glabellar lines, the lines between the eyebrows that can become severe from frowning and tensing of the eyebrows. When this medication is injected into the muscle, it no longer contracts, which smoothes the wrinkles on the skin. This, in turn, eliminates the glabellar lines that can be so stubborn.

Botox is not used on wrinkles throughout the face because of the nature of the injections. Muscles that contract and cause wrinkles are the only ones that can be addressed with Botox and the wrinkles themselves are not filled. Instead, patients may want to consider Juvéderm or another popular dermal filler to address areas that are not related to muscular contraction. Dermal fillers may be used in conjunction with Botox or Dysport in some areas for a “one-two punch.” Combination of Botox and Juvederm injections can be done at different times or the same day dependant on the patient’s particular condition.

Dr. Shelton is proud to offer a wide variety of dermatological injections for his patients, as well as many services that can provide drastic improvements in his patients’ skin.
