Q: I have a lump from Juvederm on my lip that is quite noticeable. What can be done?

A: Sometimes, lumps are treated in an aseptic setting by a doctor with a tiny drainage and expression. A sterile needle can be used by the doctor (DON'T try this yourself!). Hyaluronidase can be injected in the nodule to dissolve the product.

Q: Can I have my lips filled in NYC with Juvederm without looking like a duck?

A: A physician should not only be experienced in doing fillers, but have an aesthetic sense and be gentle-handed so as not to pump in too much filler. You can get a subtle rejuvenation rather than look like an over-done cosmetic frequent flyer.

Q: My upper lip is thin compared with the lower. Should I consider Botox or Juvederm?

A: Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid fillers that typically produce a better result for volume than Botox injections which could make the upper lip more flat and worsen the difference between the upper and lower lips. Juvederm can plump the lip more than Restylane at times and leave it feeling natural.

Q: I have very deep folds of my glabella. I am a man and have worked outside for most of my life and my skin seems to be quite thick. I just had botox and although my forehead frown lines that are between my eyebrows are better they are still there. Should I have more botox?

A: After two weeks revisit your doctor and see if the muscles are still moving. If they are then you can have more units. If the muscles are not able to be contracted then you have to give it time for the skin which has been creasing for many years to relax under a better condition now that the Botox was done. In these cases, some patients have to continue to have the botox for a year before considerable improvement is seen, by coming every 3 to four months so the botox doesn't wear off. For other patients, especially those who can't wait and have to look better prior to a social function, they may benefit by Restylane or Juvederm injections to the creases. These off-label uses of the hyaluronic acid fillers can help smoothen the deep folds but must be done cautiously and not with a lot of volume per treatment because there is a risk of interfering with the blood supply of the skin in that area causing scarring.
